Good for the Night

While walking around what seemed to be a pleasant residential neighborhood in suburban Tokyo on my way to visit the Nihon Minkaen folk house museum, I passed a shop that stood out from the rest. I kept walking, thinking nothing of it at first, but curiosity got the better of me.

The sign that caught my attention was the one advertising “Night Goods.” I really wasn’t sure what they were selling at first, but then it struck me. I saw the rest of the items on display outside and really wondered why there was a doll dressed up for Christmas. This shop wasn’t as overtly selling sex toys and pornographic material as the shops I’d seen in Shinjuku and Akihabara (there’s an entire mall there for sex toys and role playing costumes).

I’m sure I could’ve found a nice Christmas present there for a few friends.
